Sergius married Evika in 1992, bought a house and decided to settle down in Arizona. Because of his experiences with the old regime, he vowed not to ever return nor ever visit Romania. Some years later, Evika and two of their children went back to visit her family back in Romania while Sergius stuck to his decision and remained in US. While on her journey, Evika encounter some problems caused by the airline thus ended up with a free airline ticket. Reluctantly, Sergius decided to break his promise and met his family in Romania.
Once there, he instantly realized how many orphan, abused, neglected homeless children were that lived in sewers and in utter lucid poverty. At that moment, God put on his heart to start and do something to help these children. Before then, Sergius was sending out packages from the United States with food and clothing to those people that he thought needed help. But now, he realized the bigger picture. With very little money he and his wife had, in a small village about thirty minutes outside Bucharest, the construction of a very modest home for the children began and called it Haven for Children. After a few years of hard work and overcoming numerous obstacles, the new "home" has opened its doors to any helpless child.
Currently, Sergius and his family share everything they have with over fifty needy children. Modest, selfless, unpretentious, Sergius is the first to say he's not doing enough to fulfill the needs to so many that indeed need help. But for me, he is an inspiration and a true role model that I can only humbly call him a friend and a brother.
